⏲ How to make baked tomatoes with cheese

This is an overview of the recipe’s instructions. The full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Prepare: Place each sliced tomato on a parchment paper-lined sheet pan with some of the shredded Parmesan, then the shredded mozzarella, then the remaining shredded Parmesan. Sprinkle on some chopped basil, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper before drizzling on some oil.
  • Bake: Bake the tomatoes in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbling, about 10-12 minutes.
  • Broil: Transfer the baking sheet to the top rack of the oven, turn on the oven broiler, then broil until the cheese is golden, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Garnish And Serve: Garnish the tomatoes with an additional sprinkle of pepper before serving.
Use a spatula to serve right from a separate shallow baking dish or right from the baking sheet.

👉 Ingredient substitution suggestions

  • Roma Tomatoes: Beefsteak or heirloom tomatoes work here. Slice them in half horizontally and then add a couple of minutes to the bake time to ensure they cook through.
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese: Shredded cheddar cheese works well here in place of mozzarella.
  • Fresh Basil: Fresh oregano or fresh thyme would be the best alternatives here, but dried basil can also be used.
  • Italian Seasoning: Dried oregano and/or dried basil can be used here.

〰️ How to serve the tomatoes

  • Serve as a side dish to turkey, ham, steak, chicken, or fish.
  • Serve with a slice of avocado toast and a fried egg for a holiday brunch.

💬 FAQs

How should baked Parmesan tomatoes be stored?

These are best enjoyed fresh, but if you have leftovers, store the prepared tomatoes in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat for 30-60 seconds in the microwave or in the oven at 375 degrees until warmed throughout.
